"The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions". In war the victorious side always believes itself justified.
When in 2003 the Looters ransacked the Museum in Baghdad and carried off priceless collections, the Soldiers sat on their sandbags and did nothing to stop it because they had no orders to do so. The Sculpture above was the beginning of my response to those events. The broken statue suggests both the appropriated artifacts of an ancient culture and the loss of life and limb suffered as a result of "Collateral Damage".
The canon is also part of the "LOOTED" collection. Cause and Effect! It is made of recycled paper [as are the toes] and is based upon an early 19th. Century Ship's Canon from the Napoleonic wars.
Napoleon famously 'collected' quite a few treasures from Egypt which in due course inspired the 'Empire Style'.
Hello,
I am Katy Hick and I am an Artist, a Teacher and a writer. This work is concerned with various issues including environmental themes, and notions of treasure and plunder and looting.
Possibility for the floor for my entrance hall.
The mosaic above has two themes. Its composition is based upon music: The flowing lines of a melody, the bar structure pacing the timing and percussive notes symbolised by the irregular sized squares and circles which are dotted around the design.
The other theme is the tropical rain forest of Borneo. In Brunei ancient tracks often follow the streams through the jungle. I have frequently explored these trails and based my work upon the things I see there. The wiggly blue lines [melody] show the streams, the red curls are the ferns which grow here and the greens are for the leaves and the grey lines [bars] are the new trees growing. The irregularly placed squares and circles are for the miriad insects and small creatures which buzz and sting as you pass.
The actual mosaic is tesseri and cut tiles upon plywood 22" x 38". I used Adobe Photoshop to repeat the design and fit it into the barn to see what it would look like on this scale.
